Why Take Physics at EKU? The Eastern Kentucky University Department of Physics and Astronomy offers undergraduate degree programs in a number of areas, including the Bachelor of Science in Physics, Engineering Physics, and Physics Teaching. In addition, a dual degree pre-engineering program is offered in association with both the University of Kentucky and Auburn University. The Department presently has seven faculty members whose research interests are mainly concentrated in atomic/laser physics, solid state physics, computational optics, nonlinear dynamics, mechanical engineering, astronomy, and physics/astronomy education. Student involvement in research is strongly encouraged. Excellent computer facilities, both in the Department and on campus, are also available for undergraduates for research and/or assistance in course work. In addition to excellent facilities, The Eastern Kentucky Physics Department offers students an atmosphere of extensive student-teacher interaction and small classes. Since the Department is relatively small each physics student receives close personal attention and guidance. Teaching is strongly emphasized at Eastern. In fact, it is our number one priority. As a result, physics students have daily access to faculty for individual assistance. And our faculty are well qualified. Each member of the Department possesses a doctoral degree. One of the things of which we are especially proud is that our students have had excellent success upon graduation. They have obtained exciting positions in engineering/physics (including teaching) or they have received fellowships/assistantships to graduate school. Our graduates can be found at a variety of places. These include such outstanding educational institutions as Harvard University and research and development companies such as Nichols Research. In sum, if you come to Eastern for physics, and are successful in graduating, we can almost guarentee that you will have success in obtaining a fine job. We have the track record to prove it.
